George Walter Kornegay, born Bet. 1816 - 1817 in North Carolina; died Aft. 1880. He married Clarissa Rouse 1841 in Craven County, North Carolina.
Clarissa Rouse, born Bet. 1823 - 1824 in North Carolina; died Aft. 1860. She was the daughter of John Willis Rouse and Elizabeth Becton.
Notes for George Walter Kornegay:
In the Dale county 1860 census.George Walter is listed as 43 years old. That would have made him born in either 1816 or 1817 depending on what month his birthday was in . I am 99.9% sure that this is his correct birth year, because in the 1870 census he is 53 which agrees with the 1860 census. Also in the 1860 census he is listed as a school teacher. I had heard that he was a school teacher, but had no proof until now. If he was living in Dale Co. in 1860 he must have taught school somewhere around there. Since he would have had to travel by horse or on foot, the school couldn't have been far away. In 1870 he is listed as a farmer. So he quit teaching school between 1860 and 1870. In the 1860 census Sophia is listed as 32 years old. I think this is probably the correct age for her. In the 1870 census she is listed as 22, which would have made her only 9 years old when she got married. That is obviously incorrect. The age of their daughter Prudence is listed as 3 years old, which agrees with the 1870 census.

Notes for Clarissa Rouse:
George Walter and Clarissa moved to Dale County, Alabama. in the early 1800's they were both probably born in Jones County, North Carolina.
Clarissa was found during the 1850 census in Jones County, North Carolina, living by herself with her four children.(Beaver Creek District page 137) dwelling 388, family 380 value of real estate was 800.
Clarissa Rouse Kornegay was raising her 4 children in Kinston North Carolina when the civil war broke out. I would assume that she and her husband George Walter Kornegay were divorced because at that time he was remarried and living in Alabama.
