John Willis Kornegay. He seems to have had

an interesting and heroic Civil War career.

He enlisted 5/27/61 at age 19 into co. F of the 2nd N.

Carolina. His residence was listed as Craven County.  He spent the early

yrs of the war in N. Carolina, where on 3/1/62 he was promoted to seargent.

In June of 62 his regiment was attached to Robert E. Lee's Army of

Northern Virginia.  He fought in Garlands brigade of D.H. Hills corp. He

fought in the 7 Days battles , being heavily engaged at Gaines Mill and

espesially Malvern Hill where the 2nd sustained heavy casualties in Hills

foolish frontal assault on the entrenched federals. They fought at Antietam

in the sunken road.  John was captured 5/3/63  during the battle of

Chanceloresville. He was in the front line of Stonewall Jacksons attack on

Hookers right flank, in Stephan Ramseurs brigade of robert Rodes division.

He was captured in the Fairview area during ramseurs attack there which

secured that important ground for the Confederates. (Marching right over

Virginia troops which had layed down and refused to attack).  The rebel

guns that were then moved to the fairview area made Hookers position at

Chanceloresville untenable and forced him to retreat.  John was confined

5/5/63 in washington D.C.. He was paroled 5/10/63 and sent to City Point

Va. where he was exchanged the same day.  He fought at Gettysburg, being

part of Ramseurs brigade, Rodes Div of Richard Ewells 2nd Corp.  On 11/7/63

John was again captured at Kellys Ford Va. during Ewells weak attempt to

keep the federals north of the Rappahanock River. (Ewell was relieved of

2nd corp command as a result). John was sent to the Union POW camp at Pt.

Lookout Maryland. He was paroled 2/25/65 and transferred to Aikens Landing

Va. for exchange.  He then rejoined Lee's army where on April 9th 1865 he

was surrendered with the rest of the Army of Northern Va. at Appomattox.
