E-Mail sent to Judy Philen, Gail Britton, and Bob Grantham (of Jackson, MS) July 6, 2005
Hi Judy, Gail and Bob:
You know it is amazing what you can find when you go back and re-read material you have. Bob and Judy you both know I have all the issues of the Grantham Gazette. After I sent all of you the reports I did on Old Edward Grantham down to where I think William Grantham should go ..... and also from William Grantham down I came up with the brilliant idea to go back to the very first issue that Ron Johnson put out of the Grantham Gazette and start entering all the information from Volume 1, Issue 1 in 1997 up the present. I have just starting on Volume 4, Issue one but I kind of glanced ahead to see what was coming up. Here are some of the things I found:
Volume 4, Issue 4 (October 2000), Page 3, covers Generation Five Children of John Grantham II. It says:
"John Grantham II, son of John Grantham and Ann Brown? and grandson of Edward Grantham II and Catherine Proctor, was born circa 1753. he is thought to have married an unknown Jernigan on March 4, 1784. Children of John and Unknown Jernigan were Lewis, William, James, Richard, John III, and Elias Grantham. John Grantham II died in 1845 per Revolutionary War payment record.
Some researchers believe John Grantham II is the same man who later appears in Glynn/Wayne County, Georgia married to Mary Ann Collins?. This John was born circa 1760 and died in late 1818. He came from the Barnwell District of South Carolina and his origins have not yet been found. This john is named in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery for Glynn County Registrants along with John, Ann and Robert Grantham.
Lewis Grantham
Lewis Grantham, son of John Grantham II and unknown Jernigan, was born circa 1776 in Robeson County, North Carolina. Lewis' wife has not been identified. There was a Lewis Grantham who married Lucy Austin on February 16, 1796 in Surry County, Virginia, but there is no evidence to connect these two men.
There are no known children of Lewis and unknown wife.
Lewis appears in the following Censuses:
1790 - probably living in father's house in Georgia - Census Lost
1800 - probably living in father's house in Georgia - Census Lost
1810 - probably living in Hancock County, Georgia - Census Lost
Nothing else is known about Lewis.
William Grantham
William Grantham, son of John Grantham II and unknown Jernigan, was born circa 1788 in Robeson County, North Carolina. William married January 1, 1811, Edy Williams in Hancock County, Georgia.
Children of William and Edy were:
1. Nancy Ann Grantham, b. c1812, d. ?, m. 1845 James C. Bush
2. William Grantham II, b. c1814, d. ?, m. c1835 Saleta _____ (NOTE: We know this is Letty Crutchfield Marriage was March 8, 1821 in Pulaski Co., GA but I think was a product of an earlier marriage)
3. Lucinda Grantham, b. c1815, d. ?, m. 1837 Samuel Etheridge
(NOTE: Child not listed in this article but covered in a later article was John Grantham that married Sarah Grimes.)
William appears in the following Censuses:
1790 - probably living in father's house in Georgia - Census Lost
1800 - probably living in father's house in Georgia - Census Lost
1810 - probably living in Hancock County, Georgia - Census Lost
1812 Hancock Co, GA Tax Roll page 71
1820 not found. Edy, wife of William, appears in the following Censuses:
1830 Early Co., GA Edy GRANTHAM males 1 (15-20); females 1 (15-20), 1 (40-50)
William Grantham appeared on a list of persons in Hancock County who were entitled to draw lands in the lottery of Ocmulgee lands of 1806 - entitled to 2 draws and who is enrolled in Captain Thomas' District. Georgia law allowed 2 draws to every free white male, resident of the state for 3 years, age 21 or older, having a wife or children under age 21.
William attested to a Laurens County, Georgia land sale in Hancock County, Georgia on October 11, 1808. Sometime between 1808 and 1827 William relocated to Early County, Georgia.
William Grantham, Sr. of Early County, Georgia was a "fortunate drawer" in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1827 (land lot #45, Dist. 19, Lee Co, Grantham 12-17-1835).
The presence of Edy Grantham in the 1830 Early County, Georgia Census confirms that this is the William Grantham from Hancock County. William was either deceased or away from home when the 1830 Census was taken. Neither Edy nor William can be found in later records.
(NOTE: We know that William was killed by Indians 1-15-1828 as documented by claims to the Governor of Ga and documented in the History of Stewart County, Volume II.)
The article continues to document James, Richard, John III and Elias.
Grantham Gazette, Volume 5, Issue 3, (July 2001)Page 10 has the following:
Granthams mentioned in Early Georgia Records
1828 Vol 1 -- page 63
Sequential Number: 049
Full Title: AN ACT to change the time of holding the Superior Courts in [illegible text] Chattahoochie Circuit, and to fix the time of holding the Inferior Courts in the counties of Randolph and Campbell, and to provide for the organization of the counties of Lee, Randolph, and Campbell.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Georgia in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same. That the time of holding the Superior courts in Chattahoochie circuit, shall be as follows:
Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That the place of holding [Illegible Text] election in the county of Randolph, shall be at the house of William Grantham; and in the county of Campbell, at the house of John F. Beavers; and in the county of Lee, at the house of Benjamin Matthews.
Then in Volume 7, Issue 1 (January 2003) was the detailed study that Ron and I did based on information we both had to pull the article together. This was Ron's summary:
"Editor's Best Guess:
Evidence seems to point to John A. Grantham being born in Georgia circa 1810-12. The only Grantham families in Georgia that early were those of John Grantham II who settled in Washington County in the 1790's, John Grantham of Glynn County circa 1803 (no relationship known for these two John Granthams), and Daniel Grantham of Irwin County. Descendants of John Grantham II expanded into Warren and Hancock Counties. These are the origins of William Grantham who married Edy Williams there in 1811 and relocated into Early County, Georgia in the 1820s only to be killed by Indians.
William is the most obvious choice as John's father. There is a male 15-20 in the household of widow Eady Grantham in the 1830 Census, which matches John's age. Henry Grantham born 1801, with very close connections to John, was the Administrator of William's Estate in 1829 indicating that he might be a son of William. But Henry's birth 1801 in Georgia is well before William's marriage to Edy. There would have to have been a previous marriage for William. Henry first married in Hancock County, Georgia in 1821 at age 20. Captain Henry Grantham married second Celia Brady on July 12, 1844, in Stewart County, Georgia. Henry, the eldest son of William Sr., was named administrator of his estate.
The other son William, Jr. appears in Randolph County records selling land in 1830, but is not found in Early, Stewart, or Randolph County after that date. If William and Edy were married in January of 1811, a son would not be of age in 1828 to make such claims, sign petitions, and sell land. So William, Jr. like Henry, would have to have been born in a prior marriage of William Sr.
In Summary, William Sr. most likely had children by a prior marriage, one earlier than Edy in 1811. William entered his name in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery (held in 1803), which would mean he was born circa 1782 (entrants had to be 21 for the lottery and also have a wife or child under age 21). Therefore he probably married circa 1800 and sired sons Henry and William, Jr. by this first marriage. My conclusions are that William Grantham, Sr. (1782-1828) had sons Henry (1801) and William Jr. (1804) by unknown first wife. he then married second Edy/Eady/Edith in 1811 and had son John A. and two daughters, Nancy Anne and Lucinda. Lucinda married Samuel Etheridge in 1837 and Nancy Anne, nearly an old maid at age 34, married the widower James Calvin Bush in 1845. Nancy named two of her daughters Nancy Lucinda and Edith, in effect, pointing back to heritage.
Indians killed William, Sr. in 1828 and William, Jr. seems to disappear from the area. However, I believe that William, Jr. is the same man who married 1821 Leathy Crutchfield in Pulaski County, Georgia. he appears in the 1850 Census of Marion County, Georgia age 46, born in Georgia with wife Leta and Children Benjamin 23, Washington 19, Mary 20, Sarah 16, and Martha 9.
Nathan Grantham and son Noel Grantham appear in Stewart County records in 1837 (Nathan selling land). Nathan was a 1st cousin once removed to William Grantham, Sr. Nathan and William appear to have purchased land there circa 1822. Nathan moved into Alabama after selling his land in 1837.
John A. is the male 15-20 who appears in Edy's household in the 1830 Census. he was the first child by her and William Sr. One of the two females 15-20 is most likely Lucinda who married Samuel Etheridge in 1837. The other is Nancy Anne who married James Calvin Bush.
================
Bottom line I would say based on all the research that we have all done, especially Ron - you all know how well he researches everything -
1. William Grantham was the son of John Grantham II and unknown Jernigan.
2. William Grantham married 2 times
3. William had Children Henry, William Jr, John A, Nancy Anne and Lucinda
I think there are still a few inconsistencies but by the time Ron gets to this particular family again in his primary article each issue that covers the Descendants of Edward Grantham of Surry County Virginia maybe we have have cleared up some more of the mysteries of this bit of the family. It has taken Judy and I more than 5 years just to get from Thomas Jefferson to John A to William Grantham...... It is wonderful to see some valid guesses of William's heritage.
Take care and hope to hear from all of you again soon.
Sorry this is so long but wanted to try to cover the primary points of interest. :-)
Cecilia
PS. Judy, today I received a copy of the article Sherrie wrote for the Legacy several years ago. It was interesting to see where we were in our search when she wrote the article and the information we have found out since then.

UPDATES
This issue has two feature articles. One continues the series detailing the descendants of Edward Grantham of Surry County, Virginia. Currently in the seventh year of publication, the Grantham Gazette is only mid-way through the fifth generation of Old Edward's descendants, those who were born in the late 1700s. The GG database has swollen to no contain more than 4,000 Grantham entries most of whom were born in the 1800s or earlier. Of course not all connect. This leads to the subject of the second article.
The second article is a case study searching for the correct lineage of a lost Grantham. Cecilia Martin and Judy Grantham Philen have been hunting for the origins of their John A. Grantham for years. We have been working together to try and solve this puzzle. Although still unproven, we have found enough information for me to feel fairly certain that we have found the lineage.
The method we used was to collect as much information as possible targeting the areas where we knew John had lived. As we identified other Granthams in those areas we would then seek data from where they had first surfaced. We then organized this information chronologically and the family relationships began to come into focus.
There is still more evidence to be collected and we hope that readers who might be able to add to our data will send us what they have found that apply to any of these Granthams or to the areas where they lived.
This method of research usually leads to other discoveries. I was able to connect several other lost Granthams to this line once I had assembled all the clues into an organized chronology.

John A. Grantham (1811-aft1870) and Sarah Grimes (1813-aft1870)
Stewart County, Georgia and Covington County, Alabama
By Ronald E. Johnson
Pictured on the left is George W. Grantham and on the right is Thomas Jefferson Grantham. (Cecilia's Note -- Picture is in the Gazette but not here) They would be about 18 and 16 in the picture. They were both sons of John A. Grantham (1811-aft 1870) and Sarah Grimes (1813-aft1870). There were two other brothers in the Civil War also - Andrew Jackson Grantham and John A. Grantham, Jr. They all served in the same company, the Alabama 17th Infantry Company B.
The story goes that Andrew Jackson and John were killed. George was injured and Thomas was carrying him home on his shoulders when he died. NOTE: All four of these men appear on the Roster of Confederate Soldiers. These four brothers had sisters Mary Ann, Indiana, Louisa, Frances, and Hanna Grantham. A younger brother Robert Franklin Grantham born in 1855 escaped the horrors of the Civil War. The widow of Andrew J. Grantham later married Zachary Jackson Mitchell (brother of Litorah Taylor Mitchell).
The origins of the father of these children, John A. Grantham, has presented quite a challenge to researchers over the years. Hopefully someone will be able to provide the clue that enables us to prove his parents.
The following is the data collected to date:
